he "before" photograph on the left side has deteriorated
significantly. This type of deterioration is called FRILLING and
pieces of the emulsion are cracking and peeling off the paper stock.
In fact, this original looked like a jig-saw puzzle because there were
so many pieces missing. Frilling occurs most often from cyclical
temperatures and humidity. The "before" photo deteriorated because
it was stored in an uninsulated attic. In the summer it was hot and
humid, then when winter came the photograph was subjected to severe
cold and dryness. Year after year and season after season of cyclic
conditions encourages the photograph to become brittle and pieces of
the emulsion separate from the paper backing
